Office Assistant vs. Receptionist

An Office Assistant provides administrative and clerical support to the office staff, while a Receptionist is primarily responsible for managing the front desk, greeting visitors, and handling incoming calls.


The responsibilities of a Receptionist include:

  • Greeting and welcoming guests as they arrive at the office
  • Directing visitors to the appropriate person or office
  • Answering, screening and forwarding incoming phone calls
  • Maintaining a tidy and presentable reception area with all necessary stationery and material
  • Providing basic and accurate information in-person, via phone or email

The qualifications required for this position are:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Hands-on experience with office equipment (e.g. fax machines and printers)
  • Professional attitude and appearance
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Multitasking and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Customer service attitude
  • High school degree; additional certification in Office Management is a plus
