- Help us support asylum seekers and refugees in Sheffield and South Yorkshire!
We’re looking for an energetic, compassionate, and experienced youth worker with knowledge of the UK asylum system to makea real change to the life chances of young people seeking asylum.
Working alongside the Project Coordinator and Project Assistant, you will be responsible for supporting young asylum seekers aged 14-25 through both group work and 1:1 engagement. You will help them to build social groups, reduce isolation, and access a range of social, emotional, and practical support while they navigate the complex and challenging processes of the UK asylum system.
You will be responsible for maintaining ‘Happy Group’, a weekly support group for young refugees and asylum seekers, providing a safe, welcoming and friendly space for them to build social networks, access support, and learn about relevant opportunities, ranging from professional training to trips to the football.
You will also work as part of the Youth Welfare team to maintain the project’s offer to young adults in the asylum system, making weekly visits to the main asylum hotel in Sheffield to deliver a mix of group-based youth work and 1:1 casework, supporting young people to access opportunities, deal with their asylum case, and feel included in their host city.
Key responsibilities:
We’re looking for someone who has experience working with groups and individual young people in a professional capacity, some knowledge and experience of dealing with the UK asylum system, and be able to communicate often complex information to people who do not have English as a first language. In this role you’ll be a key point of contact for newly arrived young asylum seekers and refugees, helping young people resolve practical needs as well as building the supportive relationships that help young people flourish. The ideal candidate will be an energetic and experienced youth worker, who works with compassion and takes a strength based and trauma informed approach to supporting vulnerable young people
Essential criteria
Proven experience of:
·2+ years of professional experience supporting vulnerable young people
·Professional experience working with and supporting refugee and asylum-seeking people and a strong commitment to their equality and dignity
·Experience supporting young people affected by trauma and experiencing poor mental health
·Experience building and fostering positive, nurturing, and respectful relationship with young people
·Experience of developing projects, managing budgets, working to project targets, and submitting donor reports on time
·Experience delivering youth group sessions to mixed English level groups
·Experience working across cultures and languages in a positive and respectful manner
Knowledge and understanding of:
.the UK asylum system, how to address and resolve related issues, and the subsequent challenges facing young asylum-seekers in this context.
·Wider contemporary context of asylum and migration, including some knowledge of typical refugee migration patterns to the UK
·Safeguarding policies and procedures, especially for those experiencing complex trauma
